Back to Press releases

OPTIFAST® is evidence-based and endorsed by healthcare professionals

Nestlé OPTIFAST® Very Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) helps those looking to lose weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle. South Africans can use the intensive weight loss programme to manage obesity-related conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnoea.

The VLCD Programme is divided into four phases: Phase 1 is the intensive phase, Phase 2 is the transition phase, Phase 3 is the maintenance phase and phase 4 is the stabilisation Phase. One can begin at the phase that best suits their needs and weight loss goals.

The OPTIFAST® Programme incorporates meal replacement products plus vegetables in the Intensive phase, followed by the gradual replacement of appropriate meals to maintain the achieved weight loss. OPTIFAST® is designed as a flexible programme so that you can interchange or have any combination of the OPTIFAST® products so that it suits your preferences and lifestyle.

"We are very excited that this programme is now accessible to the wider public and will help assist those looking to embark on their weight loss journey. OPTIFAST® is evidence-based and endorsed by healthcare professionals. The OPTIFAST® Programme is comprehensive, effective and safe to use, and best outcomes are seen under the supervision of a healthcare professional," explains Nithal Soni Ramjee, Commercial Manager, Nestlé Health Science in ESAR.

"Obesity prevalence has grown dramatically in South Africa and has contributed significantly to the rise of non-communicable diseases in the country. People who use meal replacements to lose weight must choose products that will not compromise their required daily intake of vitamins, minerals and protein," says Monique Bailey, Registered Dietitian.

“The range of products includes nutritional shakes, desserts, and bars which come in multiple flavours, these products contain the recommended daily requirements for vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids and protein, remaining within health compliance,” continues Soni Ramjee.

OPTIFAST®, is a clinically proven meal replacement product and programme for weight management, is available to purchase directly from eCommerce websites such as Takealot to ensure product accessibility. It is still recommended that the OPTIFAST® Programme is followed under the supervision of a registered dietitian or a healthcare professional.
