World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2020

Safet at work

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. It is held on 28 April and has been observed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) since 2003. The ILO estimates that some 2.3 million women and men around the world succumb to work-related accidents or diseases every year; this corresponds to over 6000 deaths every single day - more people die whilst at work than those fighting wars. Worldwide, there are around 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related illnesses annually.

For our ESAR Market, 22 recordable injuries and six recordable illnesses were reported in 2019. More disheartening is that we had serious life changing incidents which could have been preventable. In 2020 YTD (end of March), six recordable injuries and zero recordable illness were reported.

Some of the initiatives rolled out in 2020 to improve our safety culture were:

#ESAR Safe Together

The #Safety campaign was initiated to remind our employees about their responsibility, and to get everyone involved to ensure a safe ESAR dream region.

To deliver our #ESAR Safe Together on Growing our dream region with ZERO incidents by  connecting to our People’s Hearts & Minds, it is expected that each of us must follow these basic principles:

  •  Engage and coach our colleagues when they put themselves at risk.
  •  Safety is simple, before you act, stop and think, and don’t place yourself in the line of fire.
  •  Challenge the status quo; share your innovative ideas to make our work easier and safer.

We must burst these injuries and illnesses by enforcing a zero tolerance approach in all of our facilities. We count on everyone to make the right choices, take ownership of our own safety, and demonstrate daily the zero injury and illnesses mind-set.
