Nestlé for Healthier Kids Global Initiative

Helping 50 million children lead healthier lives by 2030

Orphaned C Externalvideo:

Nutrition is key to ensure a child’s healthy development. But as always, theory is one thing, practice is another. Encouraging kids to eat more veggies and fruits, ensuring their meals are as nutritious as possible and that their protein sources are diversified can be a tough challenge for parents and caregivers.

We are conscious of the urgency to act and help addressing the challenges of children obesity and undernutrition.

With Nestlé for Healthier Kids we federate all our efforts to support parents and caregivers on their journey to raise healthier kids. From leading research to product development, from education to innovative nutrition and lifestyle services, our ambition is to help 50 million children lead healthier lives by 2030.

We know that good nutrition in early childhood lays the foundation for a child's lifelong health & wellbeing.

Through Nestlé for Healthier Kids, we seek a deeper understanding of the dietary intake, lifestyle habits and health status of infants and children.

The findings from our large-scale research projects, such as the Feeding Infants and Toddlers Studies (FITS) and the Kids Nutrition and Health Studies (KNHS), help define our product developments, consumer communication and educational programmes, and inform dialogue with the scientific and medical communities.

The two focus areas of the program:

1. Accelerating the transformation of our product portfolio

To ensure our brands support healthier lifestyles, we have already:

  • Removed over 40,000 tonnes of sugar and 6,200 tonnes of saturated fat since 2014;
  • Removed over 15,000 tonnes of salt since 2012;
  • Increased the number of micro-nutrient fortified food to 174 billion in 2017
  • 99.8% of our portfolio is free of trans-fatty acids (TFA)

We have also made forward-looking commitments by 2020:

  • Add 750 million portions (80g) of vegetables
  • Add at least 300 million portions (16g) of fiber-rich grains, pulses, nuts & seeds to products
  • Further reduce sugars by 5%
  • Further reduce salt by 10%
  • Complete our commitment made in 2014, to reduce saturated fats by 10% in all relevant products that do not meet WHO recommendations

Recent product launches including Maggi, Gerber, NaturNes, Nido...

In 2018, we launched over 1,300 nutritious food and drink products, adding to the 1,000 products that we had launched in 2017. In the same year, we provided over 184.7 billion servings of fortified foods and beverages in countries where people lack vital micronutrients such as iodine or iron.

Here are some examples:

Maggi

Culinary food with Maggi

Maggi is applying its 'Simply Good' principles to transform its product offer, using only ingredients you know, more vegetables and fiber-rich grains and less salt.

As a reference, Maggi Nutri-licious baked noodles is the latest addition to the popular Nutri-licious family in India. These noodles are baked instead of fried, they contain less fat. The new recipe also includes more vegetables.

NaturNes

Baby food with Gerber & NaturNes

Gerber and NaturNes organic baby-food – a range of vegetable and fruit purees, cereals-based snacks and nutritious meals.

Going beyond organic standards, these products, available to European and North American consumers, aim to bring the best of nature to babies and toddlers.

Cerelac

Fortification for toddlers with Cerelac

Cerelac Nature's selection is made with selected ingredients picked for their nutritional value. Rolled out in Europe in 2018, it is now being launched in markets across the world. Made of wholegrains, and free of artificial flavors and added sugar.

Cerelac Nature's selection contains just the right amount of fortification needed for small tummies.

Nido

Fortified food with Nido GoldenStart

Nido offers tailored nutrition from toddlerhood to school age. Nido GoldenStart helps when a regular breakfast is not possible, combining the goodness of milk, cereals & fruits.

Nido also entered the organic segment with Nature’s Love, a range of organic products designed for the specific need of growing children and produced following the EU organic agriculture requirements.

Milo

No added sugars with Milo

Our new ready-to-drink Milo provides kids in Thailand with enough energy to get them through the day.

It is made from simple and natural ingredients like malt, milk & cocoa, and contains no sugar or any type of added sweeteners.

Nestlé Cereals

Wholegrains and less sugar with Nestlé Cereals

Launched in 2018 in Europe, Nesquik Bio is an organic variant of Nesquik breakfast cereals. Free of artificial colors and preservatives, with organic wholegrains as first ingredient.

Nestlé also recently introduced NesPlus in India, introducing Indian consumers to the goodness of wholegrain, with 20% less sugar content than other existing options on the market.

In April 2019, Chocapic launched in Chile a new recipe with wholegrain as the primary ingredient, more cocoa, and without any added sugar, artificial flavors and colors.

2. Inspiring with supportive programs and services

Parents and caregivers need help to raise kids with healthier eating and lifestyle habits. We develop programs and online services to provide them with nutritional knowledge, healthy recipes and practical tips.

In 2018, Nestlé for Healthier Kids programs reached 29 million children in 86 countries around the world.

Here are some examples:

Mum and me cooking club

Maggi

Kids involved in the cooking process tend to eat healthier. Cooking makes a difference! Maggi provides cooking classes, online recipes and cooking tips to help families cook tasty and balanced meals that kids will love.

In Germany, the Maggi Kochstudio (cooking center) provides the support parents need to cook homemade meals every day.

In Thailand, the 'Mum and Me' cooking club helps transmit cooking expertise from mother to kids, so that kids adopt healthy long-term eating habits with more vegetables.
