Ian Donald appointed Nestlé South Africa’s Chairman and MD
Nestlé South Africa to invest R2bn into the economy in next 5 years

17 September 2014, Johannesburg: Today, Nestlé South Africa announced the appointment of Ian Donald as its new Chairman and Managing Director effective 1 October 2014. Donald succeeds Sullivan O’Carroll who will retire at the end of September 2014.

A South African citizen who has been with Nestlé for more than 40 years, Donald brings back to the country a wealth of experience in emerging markets. 



His career with Nestlé began in South Africa in 1972 and he has worked in various countries including Nestlé in Philippines, Malaysia and Pakistan. Prior to his return to South Africa, Donald was Market Head for Nestlé Equatorial African Region, based in Kenya for the past two years where he was responsible for 21 countries in that region. 

"I am excited to be back home and humbled by this opportunity to lead this company that has been a part of our country for almost 100 years. I would like to thank Sullivan for his sterling leadership over the past five years and I look forward to building on his legacy and continuing to leading this company to even greater heights,” said Ian Donald, incoming Chairman and MD of Nestlé South Africa.

The company also announced that it will invest R2 billion into the business over the next five years. “Nestlé believes in Africa as an investment destination and part of our ongoing investment will include increasing capacity for our coffee factory in Estcourt, Kwa-Zulu Natal with the aim of creating a coffee hub for the region,” added Donald.

Over the past five years O’Carroll has been instrumental in continuing the transformation journey of Nestlé South Africa as well ensuring sustainable profitable growth of the business.

“Being at the helm of one of South Africa’s biggest food and beverage companies has been both exciting and challenging especially at a time when South Africa was experiencing the impact of the economic downturn. We have still managed to delight and nourish our consumers. I have the pleasure of working with a dedicated team of professionals who are committed to growing this business. It has been a great professional journey,” concluded O’Carroll.
