Nestlé Healthy Kids Easter Roadshow

Back to Press releases

23 & 24 March 2017 – Nestlé South Africa will embark on a two day Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme roadshow at Bryandale and Shukumani Primary Schools, in Bryanston and Tembisa, respectively.

As part of the Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Programme, pupils from both schools will take part in cookery workshops led by a trained chef from Nestlé Professional. The learners will be taught about different food groups and the benefits of eating healthy, and also the importance of food portion control. In addition, the learners will participate in multiple sporting codes – including, soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball, hoola hoop, skipping rope, and boot-camp exercises.

The programme is designed for learners between the ages of 6-12 years old and focuses on teaching children about the importance of good nutrition, drinking water, taking part in physical activity and leading a healthy lifestyle.

During the cookery workshops, about 40 learners will prepare healthy lunchboxes from a wide selection of healthy ingredients which will be on display at our local “Nestlé Healthy Kids Spaza Shop.” When the lunchbox preparation exercise is complete, the chef will choose and reward the best prepared and healthiest of all the lunchboxes. Simultaneously, other participating learners will be engaged in sport and physical activities, which will be conducted by Nestlé Volunteers.

According to recent media reports based on multiple professional nutrition studies, South Africa is currently experiencing an increase in overweight and obese children, and adolescents. This has led to the explosion of non-communicable diseases related to poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles.

As a Nutrition, Health and Wellness company says Nestlé South Africa spokesperson Motshidisi Mokwena, we have partnered with the Department of Basic Education to conduct nutrition education programmes at all schools across the country in order to respond to this issue.

“Through the Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme, we intend to reach out to as many children as possible and we want to partake in the process of educating our youth about good food choices and securing healthier futures. Children should know very early in their lives that eating well and taking part in physical activities will have a positive impact on their lives, says Mokwena."
