Nestlé South Africa Goes Green

Back to Press releases
Nestlé South Africa today unveiled to the media its new environmentally sustainable Head Office located in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The new building will contribute to the sustainability of the environment while providing a healthy and stimulating workplace for the company’s employees.

26 October 2010, Bryanston Johannesburg: In recognising that economic activities should have a minimum negative impact on the environment, Nestlé South Africa will be moving its Johannesburg based headquarters to a “green” building next month. The move forms part of Nestlé South Africa’s commitment to sustainable development, which is in line with its creating shared value business principle.

The new building which took four years to complete, aims to contribute to environmental sustainability as well as offer an improved employee comfort level.

The 10 480 m2 area space features cutting edge technology which includes special glass that reduces glare, an intelligent lighting system with motion features and electronic dimmable ballasts around the perimeter of the office space. The building’s atriums have been designed to allow the lights to dim and allow natural lighting to filter through, thus increasing energy conservation.

Speaking at the media site visit Nestlé’s Corporate Affairs Director, Ravi Pillay said, “in addition to the above, our air-conditioning plant has been specifically designed to utilise Ammonia Chillers which uses 40 percent less energy consumption reducing usage of electricity and carbon emissions significantly. Heat exchange water heaters have also replaced the traditional geysers.

“Over and above the social responsibility, the economic reality of a “green” work place is an improved productivity and staff performance. With our numerous pause areas, state of the art coffee bar, in-house crèche, wellness centre, a baby feeding room and a gym and pet area we wanted to construct a friendlier, healthier and more comfortable building which will enhance quality of the working environment and thereby encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle.” said Pillay.

The building is surrounded by indigenous landscaped gardens. Nestlé South Africa’s employees can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the indoor gardens. White sound, acoustic ceilings and access floors will reduce all ambient noise. The structure of the building will maintain an increase in airflow into the access floor thus ensuring comfort for staff.

Nestlé South Africa has also applied for a Green Star Rating. “The awarding process takes 12 months and we are confident that we will be certified “Green” by this time next year,” concluded Pillay.
