The staggering recent youth unemployment rate of 32.2% in Southern Africa serves as a crisp reminder of the uphill battle faced by young people across the region today. It not only highlights the tremendous challenge they encounter in accessing job opportunities but also underscores the pressing need for comprehensive support systems to help graduates not only secure but also retain employment.
In a job market that grows increasingly cutthroat, the development of youth skills has emerged as a vital focal point, demanding urgent attention. These ambitious and diligent individuals, who have invested years of hard work and unwavering dedication into their studies, often find themselves grappling with the daunting task of finding meaningful employment. While landing that coveted job opportunity is a significant milestone, the transition from the academic world to the corporate realm can be an even more daunting hurdle for these individuals.
The journey from university to the professional world can be overwhelming, filled with uncertainty and new responsibilities. Many young graduates find themselves facing a stark reality: the skills and knowledge acquired during their education may not fully prepare them for the demands of the corporate environment. This is where companies have a crucial role to play in bridging the gap between academia and the corporate world, providing the necessary support and resources to empower young professionals for success.
Forward-thinking organisations recognise the importance of practical, long term and hands-on initiatives to nurture and develop the potential of young talent. They understand that youth development goes beyond simply hiring fresh graduates; it involves investing in their growth, providing mentorship, and creating opportunities for skill development. These companies understand that by empowering young professionals, they are investing in their own future success.
One such company that exemplifies this commitment is Nestlé, a global leader in the food and beverage industry. Through their Nestlé Needs Youth (NNY) initiative, the company has taken a proactive approach to address the challenges faced by young professionals entering the corporate world. Their graduate program serves as a prime example of a practical and tangible commitment to youth development.
As an alumnus of the programme, the graduate programme, which is part of the NNY initiatives, has had a profound impact on my career journey. Starting as a participant in 2019, I have witnessed tremendous growth and advancement within the company. Initially joining the marketing department, I gained valuable experience for two years before assuming the role of assistant brand manager for NIDO. This position allowed me to further hone my skills and understanding of brand management. I progressed from being a graduate to working various roles within the organisation and eventually attaining this role of senior brand manager.
The graduate programme, with its comprehensive structure and emphasis on mentorship, coaching, and skills development, has prepared me not only for the world of marketing but also for broader business management. It is undoubtedly one of the best programmes of its kind, offering extensive exposure to different aspects of the company and nurturing talent from within. While the programme boasts a high retention rate, I attribute my success to dedication and hard work, as securing a permanent role within Nestlé requires continuous effort and commitment. The graduate programme has truly been instrumental in shaping my career and providing me with the necessary tools and opportunities for professional growth.]
By investing in the future of young professionals, companies not only contribute to their own success but also to the overall prosperity of society. Empowering youth for success creates a ripple effect, as these individuals go on to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
Youth development is a significant concern in today's competitive job market. However, companies that take practical and tangible steps to bridge the gap between academia and the corporate world play a crucial role in empowering young professionals for success. Through structured graduate programs, mentorship, and skill development activities, forward-thinking organizations invest in the growth and potential of their young talent. By doing so, they not only secure their own future but also contribute to the development and prosperity of society as a whole.
