A Good Planet is the foundation of everything we do; safe water for families and factories, healthy soil for the farms that feed us, clean air and thriving communities. In a world already feeling water stress and climate volatility, protecting resources isn’t optional, it keeps food affordable, safeguards jobs and makes supply chains resilient. That’s why we’re investing in regenerative agriculture, water stewardship and circular packaging at scale and why the choices you make at home multiply that.
When everyone; households, farmers, partners, and Nestlé works together, small sustainable actions add up to meaningful change. Each eco-friendly choice we make helps protect resources and build a good planet for all. Start small with practical, science‑backed actions and see the difference. Each step takes only minutes and mirrors what we’re scaling at Nestlé, so together, your choices and ours amplify impact across our communities.
“Protecting our planet isn’t optional and it isn’t the job of one group alone. Government, industry, communities, and individuals all need to act together.”
– Conny Sethaelo, Corporate Communication & Public Affairs Director
1. Be a leak detective: Check taps, toilets and outdoor hoses for leaks and prioritise fixing them.
🌍 Across ESAR:
Operations saved 73,795 m³ of water in 2024 (≈29.5 Olympic pools).
2. Take shorter showers: Install a WaterSense showerhead and limit showers to five minutes to significantly reduce water usage.
🌍 Across ESAR: We prioritise water efficiency from factory to farm. In George, South Africa, soil‑moisture probes saved 975 m³/ha – 240,825 m³ across 247 ha.
3. Wash clothes cold: Maximise efficiency by using cold wash cycles and only running full loads.
🌍 Across ESAR: We reduce energy intensity through efficiency and renewables across sites like our Babelegi factory. 966 kW solar PV plant (1,806 panels) generates ~2.1 GWh a year, meeting about 16% of the site’s electricity needs.
4. Make your fridge a food‑saver: Set your fridge to 4°C and freezer to −18°C. Leave space for airflow, label leftovers with dates.
🌍 Across ESAR: At Skimmelkrans (George), 56% of manure processed and reused; 16.25 million litres of water recycled annually – closing nutrient and water loops.
5. Consider greywater: Use treated greywater for toilet flushing if allowed, making sure to follow local rules and prevent water from flowing back into clean pipes.
🌍 Across ESAR: Our Mossel Bay plant reuses treated greywater for ablution flushing, contributing to site‑level water savings.
6. Compost your food scraps: Compost fruit/veg scraps, coffee grounds, leaves and keep out meats/grease.
🌍 Across ESAR: Farms like Skimmelkrans are safely closing the nutrient loop by returning manure and organic waste directly to the soil.
7. Read the recycling label: Check the recycling label and local rules before you throw away packaging. Some items, like plastic films and pouches, can't be recycled at home, make sure you dispose of them as instructed.
🌍 Across ESAR: Through strategic redesigns for recyclability and clarity, we achieved an 89% design-for-recycling (D4R) rate by end-2024, leading to significant material savings, including cutting 636 tonnes of virgin plastic, reducing shrink film by 173 tonnes cumulatively, and converting 445 additional tonnes to D4R.
8. Switch to LED bulbs: Replace your old light bulbs with energy-saving LEDs.
🌍 Across ESAR: Facility sites are upgrading to more efficient lighting to significantly reduce energy intensity.
9. Kill “phantom” power: Put TVs, consoles, routers and chargers on a power strip and switch it off overnight.
🌍 Across ESAR: Our efforts are focused on targeting "invisible" utility losses (such as steam, air and water) to effectively minimize waste.
Small actions add up. Take one step today and invite someone else, it leads to cleaner environments, less energy waste, reduced plastic, and healthier soil. At Nestlé, we're helping make these choices part of daily life for stronger communities and a better planet. Every moment matters for our shared future.
